Mt. Hachijo-fuji

Mt. Hachijo-fuji

Gently sloping cone-shaped mountain rising 854m, with a volcanic cone on the crown that creates perfect bowl. On a clear day Hachijokojima island can be seen, and in the far distance even Mikurajima can be seen on occasion.Enjoy the view of the crater lake, and the yamaguruma (Trochodendron aralioides) forest downslope.

Nambara Senjojiki

Lava from an eruption of Mt. Hachijo-fuji pushed into the sea and then solidified, forming sheet-like terrain structures. The contrast between the jet-black lava rock and the white sea spray is truly wonderful.

Native History and Traditional Crafts Museum

About 1,500 items are on display, from stone and ceramic tools dating to prehistoric times to the implements and old documents kept by islanders as well as materials regarding exiles and local traditions. Admission charged.
The flag-stoned strolling path from here to Furusatomura features old-fashioned gas lamps.

  • Take the Municipal bus, and get off at Native History and Traditional Crafts Museum (Rekishi Minyo Shiryokan), then walk for 1 minute.

Tamaishigaki Furusatomura

In the Osato district, where parts of the stone wall that exiles once piled up, stone by stone, still exists, traditional artisans repair old dwellings, transporting and preserve the main residences, horse stalls, storehouses, and even outhouses.
Entry into the district is free.

  • Take the Municipal bus, and get off at Osato, then walk for 3 minutes.
 

Hachijo Botanical Park

Hachijo Botanical Park

See as many as 140 different varieties of subtropical plants on a 25-hectare site. Rangers in the Visitor Center can give advice on nature watching.

This means "Climbing Dragon", and was given this name because the road viewed from below really did look like a dragon ascending into the skies. One of the must-see scenic points on Hachijojima island.
